In the south west of Scotland lies Wigtown - Scotland's 'Book Town'. Wigtown is a few miles south of Newton Stewart, in a remote and unspoilt region of Scotland. There are with some wonderful holiday cottages near Wigtown by the sea, and the coastline is spectacular. There are over 30 book shops or book-related businesses in the town and so is a mecca for book lovers from all over the UK. The annual Wigtown book festival in September is a fabulous celebration of Scottish literature and books and attracts many famous authors. If you are spending a holiday near Wigtown then you are ideally situated to visit other attractions in Galloway too.

This is a great area for bird watching too. Wigtown Bay is the biggest Local Nature Reserve in the British Isles and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is home to several thousand geese in winter months as they overwinter on the mudflats and salt marshes. There is a bird hide at Wigtown Harbour where there is a flooded area to attract resident birds.

Whithorn, to the south of Wigtown, is a fascinating archaeological site and the excavations there have found some amazing Christian relics. Whithorn is the earliest known Christian community in Scotland and was the seat of St Ninian. The Whithorn Visitor Centre tells the story in a very informative way and is a great place to visit if you are renting a holiday cottage near Whithorn for your Scottish vacation.
