Slightly further afield, Melrose Abbey is 14 miles from Kelso. Much loved by Robert the Bruce he chose to have his heart buried in the chapter house there. Sporting fans will love Kelso for its racecourse and its proximity to Melrose, home to the world’s oldest rugby sevens competition which was started in 1883. Visitors can buy day tickets from the Kelso Angling Association to fish for trout and grayling on the world famous River Tweed.
