Rhoda's Cottage, Strachur, Loch Fyne
Argyll, Scotland

Situated in the beautiful grounds of Strachur Park, Rhoda's Cottage is a private wing of Strachur House, set in a 2000 acre estate. A fine Adam-style mansion, Strachur House was built by General John Campbell in the 1780s. From 1957 the house was home to the illustrious Scot, Sir Fitzroy Maclean, the soldier, diplomat and adventurer, who was said to have been the model for Ian Fleming's hero, James Bond. His family continue to live there.

There is much to explore, from the glen of Rob Roy's cave to the Mull of Kintyre; the area is rich in history, and it is accessible yet unspoilt. The shores of Loch Fyne have castles, gardens and quiet places to picnic. Rhoda's Cottage is situated on the Cowal Peninsula where there is a wide choice of activities, sights and attractions. There are many walks from a gentle woodland walk on the doorstep to more strenuous hill walks. A short drive and you will reach the historic town of Inveraray with its famous castle and award-winning visitor attraction, Inveraray Jail. There are other castles and gardens well worth a visit, including Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute, Old Castle Lachlan, Benmore Gardens and Crarae Gardens. Further afield, but within striking distance, are Oban (the gateway to the Hebrides), the Trossachs, Stirling, Perth, Glencoe and Fort William.

The area is well served with restaurants renowned for fresh local produce. Inver Cottage Restaurant is situated 6 miles away on the shore of east Loch Fyne and a perfect place for coffee and cakes or a leisurely dinner. Creggans Inn is just a short walk from Rhoda's Cottage and Loch Fyne Oyster Bar is 10 miles away. The Cowal Gathering, in Dunoon, is held in August and is the world's largest Highland Games and well worth a visit if you are staying at that time.
