Dounie House self-catering

Dounie House, Tayvallich, Lochgilphead, Argyll, West Coast Scotland

Dounie House offers beautifully appointed self-catered accommodation for up to six or eight guests. Every room enjoys either garden or sea views, ensuring you remain connected to the natural beauty outside.

Dounie House is reached via a private forestry track — five miles one way, three miles the other before you encounter a public road. With no neighbours for miles, this remarkable seclusion is rare and deeply rejuvenating.

Set within 17 acres of wild and cultivated gardens, the house sits in a pristine off-grid environment where nature takes centre stage. Ancient woodland, sweeping sea views, open skies, and abundant wildlife surround you at every turn.

Across the water lies Barnhill on the Isle of Jura, where George Orwell wrote his masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four — a reminder that this landscape has long inspired profound creativity. Nearby, Castle Dounie is home to the Iain Banks Appreciation Society, celebrating the legacy of the acclaimed Scottish author.

Few places combine such dramatic natural beauty with such rich literary heritage.

As day fades, find a quiet perch on the cliff’s edge and watch the sun sink into the Hebrides. The sky ignites in layers of amber and rose, reflected in the still water below. With no light pollution, night arrives properly here — constellations sharp and bright overhead, the only sounds the sea and the wind through trees.

And if you do feel like venturing out, Dounie House is located between the picturesque seaside towns of Tayvallich and Crinan, with charming local pubs and seafood spots in nearby villages — close enough for convenience, far enough to preserve the magic of returning to total solitude.
