Merlin Cottage, Portnellan Estate
Loch Dochart, Stirlingshire
Set within a courtyard the 'topsy turvy' accommodation with the bedrooms downstairs has extensive views across the lambing meadow to the River and Loch Dochart.
The area around Portnellan estate is steeped in history and full of dramatic scenery. Two miles west of Portnellan lies the village of Crianlarich. In the 1750s two military roads met in Crianlarich and in the 19th century it became a railway junction on what is now the West Highland Line. This spectacular train line was voted the most scenic railway in the world. Nowadays Crianlarich is the meeting point of the A82 and the A85 coming in from Glasgow in the south and Perth in the east respectively.
With Oban in the west and Fort William in the north, Crianlarich and in particular Portnellan are the perfect place to be based in order to explore the surrounding countryside and for taking day trips to Loch Lomond, The Trossachs and Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.
To the east of Portnellan lies the beautiful Loch Earn. In the summer the loch is a hive of activity with sailing, water sports and even the occasional sea plane. At the head of the loch is Lochearnhead and as you drive along the northern shore you can take in the stunning scenery, stopping at the various view points. Towards the end of the loch is the pretty village of St Fillans with its sailing school and water sports centre.Beyond St Fillans the A85 takes you on to Comrie, Crieff and then on to the city of Perth which stands on the mighty River Tay.
Merlin Cottage is located in the courtyard of Portnellan Estate and offers well appointed 5 star self catering accommodation sleeping up to five people. there is free salmon and trout fishing on estate lochs and rivers, bike hire and use of Canadian canoes and kayaks on site.
