Tylehurst Cottage , Clava, Culloden, Inverness-shire

This page is due to expire try:

Tylehurst Cottage, in the pretty fermtoun of Clava, offers peace and quiet in the tranquil surroundings of Strathnairn. The river flows past less than seventy yards from the back door and salmon fishing tickets can be purchased locally - there are lots of other excellent fishing rivers and lochs in the area. Long and short walks over rough moorland or along fisher tracks following the river start from the door-step. Clava, though less than six miles from the centre of Inverness is a peaceful backwater which offers a perfect highland holiday retreat.

In the immediate vicinity are the 4500 year old Clava Cairn group and Culloden Battlefield, site of the last unsuccessful attempt of Bonnie Prince Charlie to regain the British throne for the Stuarts. Cawdor Castle, reputed home of Shakespeares Thane of Cawdor, is just along the road and is a fascinating castle with beautiful gardens. Within 10 minutes drive are excellent riding facilities. Inverness and Nairn offer a variety of golf challenges and there are some superb golf courses near the cottage. Children will love the beautiful sandy beaches on the Moray coast and on a hot summer day Nairn beach provides relief from the heat of the day and a chance to develop your sand castle building skills!

Not much further afield are the wilds of upper Strathnairn and Loch Ness, the Hanoverian military base of Fort George looking over to Chanonry Point on the Black Isle where (with luck) you can spot members of the local dolphin pod cavorting in the waves. Further day trips lead to Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park and Mountain Railway with sailing and canoeing on Loch Morlich and Loch Insh, or gentle rambles round Loch an Eilein. The Strathspey Whisky Trail, Brodie Castle and Findhorn Bay and the Findhorn Community are all within an hour and a bits driving time. Even a visit to Ullapool or Applecross on the West Coast or to John OGroats and Duncansby Head in the far north of Scotland are easily reachable within a day.
