In a wonderfully central location, Kirkton of Balmerino is ideally suited for touring and exploring central Scotland. Being only a few miles from the motorway network, both Edinburgh and Glasgow are within easy driving distance: Edinburgh approximately an hour and Glsgow aprroximately an hour and a half. Most visitors will also enjoy exploring the picturesque fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife with their cobbled streets, white washed buildings and traditional fishing harbours. During the summer months these villages are host to a variety of art, craft, theatre and music festivals.
The holiday cottage is also an ideal base for walkers and cyclists and you will find a number of suggested routes, all laminated and easy for you to take with you on a day out. Only half a mile away are the ruins of Balmerino Abbey, a Cistercian monastry dating back to 1229. Historians will also be interested in the mediaeval university town of St Andrews with its castle, cathedral and city walls. St Andrews has a wide range of shops and boutiques, bars and restaurants, sandy beaches, an excellent theatre, a cinema and leisure centre not to mention some world famous golf courses.
As well as several golf courses in the area, there are many more opportunities for sporting and outdoor activities. The riding school at Kinshaldy (about 9 miles from the cottage) is situated in the middle of Tentsmuir Forest and gives the you the chance to ride through miles of forest and along a beautiful stretch of sandy beach. Being so near to both the River Tay and the North Sea there are plenty of chances to take part in a whole range of watersports including sailing, canoeing, water skiing and windsurfing. Elie, in the East Neuk, has a great watersports centre.
The city of Dundee lies about half an hour's drive north over the Tay Bridge. Known as the "City of Discovery" it is home to Captain Scott's Antartic Royal Research ship which forms part of an award winning visitor attraction. Dundee also has a vibrant arts and culture scene with the multi-award winning Dundee Contemporary Arts as its creative hub.
