Thimble cottage is a delightful, three bedroom, detached house in Ballater, furnished to a very high standard and situated within this quaint village on the banks of the River Dee. It is set in the heart of Royal Deeside, within the Cairngorm National Park, some 40 miles inland from Aberdeen.
The village of Ballater is centred around the village green, dominated by Glenmuick Parish Church built around 1874. It has an excellent tourist information centre which is housed in the Old Railway Station along with the museum dedicated to Queen Victoria. The village has all the amenities required when on a self-catering holiday, with a good selection of shops, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs to satisfy most budgets, and many businesses proudly display their Royal Warrants. You can hire a bike, play tennis and also pitch and putt. Ballater is very community orientated, almost a step back in time where even today 5.00 can gain you entrance to the local hall for an evening of traditional music, which also possibly includes stovies and a cup of tea.
From the village it is possible to walk the old Deeside railway line from Ballater to Dinnet, passing the picturesque suspension bridge at the Cambus of May. Within a 30 miles radius one can visit many of the small castles, Drum, Craigievar, Crathes to name a few. Also close by is the Scottish home of the Royal family, Balmoral Castle with its beautiful grounds and visitor centre.
For the golfer there are some wonderful courses along Royal Deeside including Braemar, Ballater, Aboyne and Banchory. For the skier there is a choice of Glenshee and the Lecht, both within about 45 minutes. If you are a runner you will be able to run in the most beautiful surroundings for mile after mile. There are also some great attractions for children including Deeside Activity Park for a fun day out for all the family.
Throughout the summer months numerous Highland Games take place, culminating at the Braemar Gathering in September an event not to be missed. Not only will you have the chance to spot members of the Royal family but you can enjoy some superb pipe bands, Scottish dancing and the traditional heavy throwing events including tossing the caber.
Come and enjoy your holiday, experience the laid back way of life and the community spirit in this beautiful part of Scotland.
