The Chauffeur's Flat,
Lochinch Castle, Stanraer, Galloway

The Chauffeur's Flat is a historic property located in the picturesque Stable Yard adjacent to Lochinch Castle. Used as a Chauffeur's Flat until recently, it has been sympathetically renovated retaining the original features. The building looks out over the clock tower, the turreted castle and the freshwater lochs.

Lochinch Castle is the private home of the Earl and Countess of Stair and is part of Stair Estates. Situated at one end of Castle Kennedy and Gardens (also part of Stair Estates), it is surrounded by 75 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens which are free to guests. These are set between two large natural lochs on an isthmus. As well as banks of spring flowers, magnificent rhododendrons and magnolia displays, rare plants, Champion trees, a walled garden and the romantic ruined Castle Kennedy, there is a charming tea-room, gift shop, plant centre and seasonal children's activities. These include family trails, art competitions and open air theatre productions in the summer.

Fly fishing on the lochs and salmon fishing on the River Luce can be arranged via the Stair Estate office. Red deer stalking, duck flighting and pheasant shooting can also be organized with advanced notice. The gardens border onto a wildfowl refuge on the White Loch which is a designated Site of Special Interest for its breeding wader and wintering wildfowl, which include a resident population of Greylag geese, Great-crested and Little Grebes and a wide variety of ducks as well as a Heronry.

The attractive sea-port town of Stranraer is 3 miles away where day trips to Belfast by fast ferry can be arranged. It has a wide range of convenience stores several hotels and many shops, restaurants and pubs. Further afield is the picturesque sea-side village of Port Patrick which offers excellent seafood restaurants, village stores and pubs. The area is full of scenic treasures, including deserted sandy beaches, exotic gardens, rolling hillsides and open estuaries. For those who are interesting in exploring further there are numerous castles and historic attractions; book, music, food and art festivals as well as museums, visitor centers, whisky distilleries and adventure playgrounds.

Directions:
The Chauffeur's Flat and Lochinch Castle are situated approximately 3 miles east of Stranraer on the A75 road. The road takes you up a small hill and on the left hand side is the entrance where there are large iron gates. On the opposite side is a church in some trees. (If you reach Castle Kennedy village you have gone too far). Turn into the gates and follow the road for 2 miles until you reach Lochinch Castle. Drive past the Castle into the Stable Yard which is adjacent. Go through the stable yard and turn directly left. At the end of the building you will notice a driveway and door.

If approaching from the west take the A75 to Castle Kennedy village. Shortly after the village you will notice a long wall on the right hand side. Proceed until you reach large entrance gates on the right hand side. From the north, you will be driving down the A77. When you are approximately 2 miles from Stranraer, turn left onto the A751 sign posted to Dumfries. After about 3 miles at the junction with the A75, turn left toward Dumfries.
