Set high on a hill in the Angus Glens in the unspoilt Scottish county of Angus, this is an old farmhouse between Glenisla and Glenprosen, near the romantic ruined castle of Balintore but only three miles from Kirriemuir. There are six 18 hole golf courses within 12 miles, Rosemount (at Blairgowrie), Alyth, Strathmore, Glenisla, Kirriemuir and Forfar. Skiing at Glenshee is nearby and there is also great fishing and hillwalking in the spectacular Angus Glens. Pitlochry with its excellent theatre is only 40 minutes drive; Perth and Dundee are nearer.

Glamis Castle (childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother) is just a few miles away and is one of Scotlan's most fascinating castles. With ne'er a clogged road in sight, in half an hour you can either be beachcombing along sweeps of white sand or climbing in nearby mountains; either way you will be bathed in clean, clear air. Experience the pre-war shopping feel in the 'Peter Pan' little market town of Kirriemuir, birthplace of J M Barrie. Stroll over cobbled streets to visit the local butcher/fishmonger, ironmonger, baker, a real sweetie shop and an old fashioned barber.

The owner of the cottage lives next door and is happy to provide local information about off-the-beaten-track places to visit or eat; a renowned tartan shop (not a tourist in sight), bric-a-brac, markets for antiques and food, farm shops and indeed will give you a quick short cut into the swing of local life. The nearby Vale of Strathmore is justly famous for its lush farmland growing raspberries, strawberries, cereals and is home to Aberdeen Angus cattle.

Accommodation:
West Balloch is a farmhouse whose misty origins stretch back into history. The rooms are generous, stylish and well equipped with wood burners and elegant comforts-a-plenty. West Balloch lies in a gentle rural farming area, where the roads narrow into single lanes, amid the gentle dream 'lost world' of Peter Pan's Angus.

The gardens at West Balloch contain small areas to sit and contemplate, with trim little squares of box hedging and a canopy of giant, ancient sycamore trees. A tall beech hedge continues on the edge of the road, affording extra privacy. A dove cote clings to the garage wall and a huge mill stone reminds of days when farmers ground their own corn. It is a perfect garden for children.

West Balloch has 2 bedrooms, one with ensuite bathroom and the other with separate shower room. The farmhouse sleeps up to 4. There is 1 double bedroom and one room with a super kingsized bed which can be split into 2 singles.

In the later part of the building (built around 1880) there is an elegant sitting room with comfortable sofa and chairs, wood burning stove, thickly lined wool curtains and views across the valley. Also rows of books for evenings or rainy days and TV with Freesat, radio and DVD player. There are sensible tiled floors at entrances for boots, wellies and drying off damp dogs. The cosy kitchen/dining room is in the older 18th century part of the house and has a range cooker, dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer and a large wood burning stove.

Directions:
From Kirriemuir take the B955 which circles Kirriemuir to the north and take the road which is signed 'Pearsie and Lednathie'. Follow this road up the hill and as you descend on the other side, take the road straight ahead of you which is signed 'Kingoldrum and Balintore' while the main road turns down to the right. Follow this road through a farmyard which is East Balloch Farm then as you go up the hill you will soon come to a turn to the left which says Kingoldrum and Glenisla. Take this road and West Balloch is the second house on your left. It is painted white and has a sign at the gate saying 'West Balloch'. You have arrived!
