Nestling above the flood plain of the River Spey, in Britain's largest National Park - The Cairngorms - with a backdrop of the Monadhliath Mountains, Newtonmore is surrounded by woodland. Larch, pine, birch and alder predominate. This picture postcard village, while beautiful, is not a shell as it has retained its spirit and has a vibrant local community. There are a number of local shops and good local pubs and restaurants. Its location means you arrive in these beautiful surroundings in just over 2 hours drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh maximising your precious holiday time.

The Newtonmore area is a walker's heaven. Newtonmore's 'Wildcat Trail' is a 10km orbital walk around the edge of the village, taking in the River Spey and its tributary, the Calder - rivers of very different character - woodland and moorland, together with wonderful views across the strath to the Cairngorms and behind the village to the Monadhliath mountains. A fitting introduction to the delights of the National Park.

Outdoor pursuits include fishing on the River Spey, two excellent golf courses, one in Newtonmore and the other in the adjoining burgh of Kingussie. Other activities in and around the area include skiing, Wolftrax Mountain Biking Centre, RSPB sites, Highland Folk Park, Landmark Forest Theme Park, Highland Wildlife Park, Dalwhinnie Whisky Distillery, Loch Insh and Loch Morlich Water sport centres. Alternatively, why not take a trip on a romantic steam train or ride the funicular railway to the top of the Cairngorm mountains and remember not to miss your first shinty match.
