Little wonder that Beatrix Potter was inspired to write Peter Rabbit whilst on holiday in Dunkeld and Birnam. Readily accessible, this area has the most outstanding natural beauty and abounding wildlife. Dunkeld is a small, historic, cathedral town situated just north of Perth on the banks of the River Tay. Birnam was an extension to the south, developed when the railway was built. Laird’s Inn was built in about 1800. While benefiting from a central location it is found in a quiet courtyard setting and has been recently renovated to a high standard. The shops and Cathedral are easily accessible as is the network of the local walks. Cars can be parked on the road outside or in the nearby car park, which is free over the winter months.

The area offers a host of inspiring paths and trails, spectacular scenery and wildlife including ospreys and red squirrels which are not to be missed! Visitors return year after year for the walking alone. There is a good integrated network with well signposted forest trails and separate mountain bike routes. Perthshire is aptly called ‘Big Tree Country’. For golfers, there is an interesting 18 hole course at Dunkeld with some of the most wonderful views. The new club house has an enviable position with an outlook across Dunkeld and has developed a good reputation for its catering. St Andrews, Gleneagles, Carnoustie, Taymouth Castle and Rosemount in Blairgowrie are all within reach as are many smaller and interesting local courses.

Many local gardens are open during the summer with Scotland’s Garden Scheme. The Beatrix Potter Garden in Birnam is well worth a visit, also the Scottish Plant Hunter’s Garden – the Explorers Garden at Pitlochry Theatre and the Hercules Garden at Blair Castle should not be missed – an 11 acre walled garden that has been restored. Dunkeld offers a whole range of interesting and unusual shops. Going Pottie in Cathedral Street is a must! Dunkeld is also well known for its arts and music scene. There is plenty to offer, including events at Birnam Arts, Pitlochry Theatre, Perth Concert Hall and Theatre and many local musical events. The Taybank has informal folk meetings which are a great way to enjoy the local music. Birnam Institute is well worth a visit for the Beatrix Potter exhibition, interesting shop and good coffee or light lunch.

There are three famous whisky distilleries in the area: Aberfeldy, Crieff and Pitlochry. Also, the list of outdoor activities is almost endless - whatever the weather! Canoeing, rafting, climbing, clay pigeon shooting, 4 wheel drive course, quad biking, mountain biking and some of the finest fishing on local lochs and rivers. Either an action packed holiday or the perfect place to relax, Dunkeld offers both and is an ideal centre for self-catering in Perthshire.
