Shepherd's Cottage
Carbost, Isle of Skye

self-catering skye

Shepherd's Cottage is situated on a working hill sheep and cattle family farm, spanning some 6000 acres on the west coast of the magical island of Skye. It is set on the shores of Loch Eynort and there are wonderful views across the loch to Kraiknish and the summit of Cruachan.

The Isle of Skye is arguably Scotland's favourite island and visitors will not be disappointed. From the stark rise of the famous Cuillin Ridge to the white sandy beaches and many inlets and bays there is much to explore. Wildlife abounds on the island and bird watchers will be thrilled from the tiny Goldcrest to the magnificent Golden Eagle. Both Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles can be spotted near the cottage. Mammals have a similar range and the island is home to both the tiny Pygmy Shrew and the mighty Red Deer. Sitting quietly in the right spot you may be lucky enough to see the elusive Otter playing around the shore.

Skye also has a rich history and as you travel around you may well hear snatches of Gaelic being spoken. Gaelic is the indigenous language of the area and its culture and heritage pervade the atmosphere (the owners are a Gaelic speaking family). Each part of the island has differing tales of the past and there are many ancient monuments to explore. Dunvegan Castle is well worth a visit, it has been the seat of the Clan MacLeod since the 13th century, and the Clan Donald Centre takes you through 1500 years of history and culture of the area once known as the Kingdom of the Isles.

There is a wide range of activities and attractions on offer with cycling, golf, angling, pony trekking, galleries, art and craft workshops and a particularly good choice of boat trips. Skye is also famous for its whisky, a visit to the Talisker Distillery allows visitors to take a tour and find out how the famous national drink is made.

Accommodation:
The Shepherd's Cottage, which is over 120 years old, has recently been renovated to a high standard and is the ideal romantic highland retreat. While renovating the traditional v-lining and brick fireplace were removed to reveal the amazing original hearth in the living room. A wood burning stove will be installed in the autumn. To keep the character of the cottage v-lining has been used to revamp the living room and main bedroom. Oak flooring has been laid on the bedroom, living room and front hall floors, while slate is in the kitchen, bathroom and back hall. Bark-edged sycamore has been used on all window-sills and the window seat in the main bedroom. The internal doors are barn style with latches.

In the living room, the original fireplace with granite hearth is the focal point. A flat screen television with SKY is positioned in one corner. An ox blood coloured leather Chesterfield sofa and chairs provide comfortable seating. A cream Shaker-style kitchen with integrated ceramic hob, double fan oven, dishwasher and washer/drier has been installed in the spacious kitchen. A fridge/freezer and microwave oven are also provided along with many other kitchen gadgets. A fold down TV with DVD is positioned under the corner cupboard. There is a breakfast bar as well as a table and chairs for dining.

There are two double rooms in the cottage. The main bedroom, which has a kingsized sleigh bed, faces the loch. It has been revamped with traditional v-lining and oak flooring. The second room, with a double bed, is smaller but has a luxuriously comfortable memory foam mattress. The bathroom has its original free standing bath which is complimented by a state of the art power shower. The cottage is heated throughout with oil fired central heating.

Directions:
Cross the Skye bridge and follow signs through Broadford, heading for Portree. At Sligachan, 9 miles south of Portree, turn left onto the Dunvegan road and after a few miles turn left again, following the sign for Carbost, Glenbrittle and Talisker. Keep on this road until you come to a church on the right. The road then forks to the left to Glen Eynort and Talisker. Take the left fork, after a cattle grid turn left again and left once more. You'll now be on the Eynort road. Once in the glen follow the road down towards the sea. The cottage is up a private road above the shoreline.
