The Noust Stromness, The Mainland, Orkney Isles
Stromness is one of the two major towns within the Mainland Island of Orkney. It is often said that Stromness is the St Ives of the north, housing the most northern major art gallery, the Pier Art Centre, in the UK. Stromness is also steeped in the naval history of the nation and many houses still exist which were occupied by, amongst many others, agents of the Hudson's Bay Company and the Double Houses belonging to a Mrs Robertson who organised whaling expeditions for the Arctic whalers of Hull and Dundee.
A simple walk from the harbour along the stone flagged streets of the town towards the southern "Point of Ness", will introduce you to the fascinating history of this beautiful town and also bring you to the seal colony who seem to greet you as you gaze across to the mysterious and imposing island of Hoy.
There is so much to explore; Orkney is an archipelago of about 70 islands of which 17 are inhabited. The landscape is mainly low lying, fertile and gently sloping with stunning sandy beaches, an abundance of wildlife and a rich history and culture. You will receive a warm welcome and have the choice between a relaxing break or an action packed holiday. The Orkneys are perhaps the most magical part of Scotland and a world away from 21st century life.
