Cullipool House
Isle of Luing, Argyll

vacation house in Scotland luxury self-catering
sea shore

It is hard to imagine anywhere else with such stunning sea views and sunsets. On a clear day Cullipool House has 180 degrees of sea view to islands including Jura, the Black Isles, Mull, Easdale and even far off Colonsay. If you want to explore these you can charter a crewed RIB to take you where you want or bring your own boat.

Cullipool House was built as the quarry manager's house for the slate quarries on Luing in the early 19th century, and the village behind is like a film set - rows of single storey whitewashed quarrymen's cottages.

The short 300 yard ferry ride from the mainland to Luing across Cuan Sound with its wild tide race takes you away from the troubles and cares of the modern world and sets you back 50 years when the world was a simpler more friendly place. There is no better place to reinvigorate yourself. Luing has a population of some 180 people in 4 settlements, and offers very varied scenery considering its length of just over 5 miles and width of 1.5 miles - the northern end is rugged, the southern end softer and more arable, the west coast is dramatic with its fierce tidal waters and constant sailing activity, while the east side is calmer and more sheltered. Luing has a village shop for the essentials, but more serious shopping is best done at Balvicar or Oban.

There are no pubs or restaurants on Luing, but many close by, with the Oyster Bar at Easdale or the Tigh an Truish at Clachan being near and very pleasant. You can easily drive to either from across the ferry, or a boat can be arranged to take you on request, subject to the weather. It all adds to the spirit of adventure! Managing your travel back and forwards on the ferry takes a little planning but is part of the charm.

Luing has wonderful walking on both low and high ground, and is great for birdwatching, fishing etc. This is the perfect holiday home for those seeking to get away from the strains of modern life.
