This delightful wing of a traditional Scottish shooting lodge has been beautifully refurbished in 2006 and offers idyllic self-catering accommodation. Scatwell House in Strathconon is a welcome oasis for private holidays in Scotland, being perfectly located amidst the soaring mountains of Ross-shire. It is ideal for walking, hiking, mountaineering, cycling, bird- and nature-watching, golf, relaxing or for exploring the Highlands and experiencing the area�s extensive history. Fishing is available on the River Conon and shooting and stalking can be arranged on a neighbouring estates (see below for details) - also lovely canoeing on the river.

Golfing is a popular pastime in the Highlands of Scotland and there are over a dozen golf courses within 60 minutes drive of Strathconon - from the championship links of Royal Dornoch (ranked 15th in the world), to the hidden charms of Strathpeffer, to Nairn. Wildlife abounds - red deer, golden eagles, red kites, pine martens and red squirrels are prevalent - this is a haven for bird-watchers and nature-lovers.

The scenery in the Highlands is nothing short of stunning. The choice of scenic drives and places to visit from Scatwell House are endless. Visit the romantic Isle of Skye with its rugged Cuillin Mountains; Loch Ness and the elusive Loch Ness Monster; haunting Glencoe; beautiful Loch Maree; John O�Groats, the most northerly point on the mainland of the British Isles; the ancient village of Dornoch; Culloden Battlefield, Speyside Whisky Trail; Hunters Woollen Mill in Brora or Beauly, home of �the best tweed shop in the UK�. Ski at Aviemore in the Cairngorm Mountains or watch salmon leap at Rogie Falls; visit Ullapool, a stunning village combining all the best of the Highlands � sea, loch and mountains), or sample some whisky at the local distillery, Glen Ord, in Muir of Ord. There are also lots of Scottish castles within easy driving distance - Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, Cawdor Castle, Eilean Donan Castle and Balmoral Castle are some of the finest in Scotland.

Accommodation:
The South Wing at Scatwell House has been recently refurbished to a very high standard, and there is a modern well-equipped kitchen, with microwave, integral electric oven and hob, washing machine and dishwasher. On the ground floor there is a large bathroom with a cast iron bath, separate shower, loo and basin which is en-suite to one of the king-size bedrooms. The comfortable sitting room has a stereo, television, video and DVD player and a small library. One of the sofas in the sitting room can be converted into a comfortable double bed providing useful extra accommodation.

The south wing of the house is the left hand part shown in the photograph.

On the first floor lies another large bathroom with a cast iron bath, separate shower, loo and basin which is en-suite to both the double room and the second king-size bedroom. Both king-size bedrooms are double aspect, making them bright and airy, and have fitted wardrobes. There is also a fitted wardrobe in the double room. A full-size single mattress can be placed in either of the king-size rooms if required.

Guests have access to a large garden area with an ornamental pond and picnic table surrounded by beautiful woodland - the perfect place to simply relax and enjoy the tranquility and scenery.

The accommodation is let on a self-catering basis but a cook can be booked separately if required - either for a specific occasion or for the entire holiday. House-keeping services can also be arranged - just let us know what you would like and we will arrange it all for you.

This is an excellent place to stay if you are coming on a fishing holiday in Scotland. Fishing on the River Conon can be arranged. Early in the season, individual days on the exclusive Middle and Lower Conon River can be purchased but after that full weeks only are available on those sections.. The Middle and Lower Conon fishings are for 5-6 rods and include the services of an experienced ghillie. Permits for the Upper Conon and two local lochs are available through the local angling club. The owners are happy to help with all fishing enquiries.

Scatwell House also makes an ideal base if you want to do some shooting or stalking. A local estate has some excellent pheasant shooting available and additionally, stalking or mixed shooting can be arranged through a local, well-established sporting agency. Please enquire for further details and the owner will be delighted to assist.

Location:
From Inverness, follow the A9 north over the Kessock Bridge. At the Tore roundabout, take the A835 signed Dingwall. At the Maryburgh / Dingwall roundabout, take the second exit signed A835 Ullapool. Continue along this road for approximately 4 miles before turning left towards Marybank. Pass over the bridge and continue into Marybank (3/4 mile). As you enter the 30 mile per hour zone, take the single track road on the right signed Scatwell / Strathconon. Follow this road for 6 miles, passing the main entrance gate to Scatwell House on the right. Turn into the second entrance to Scatwell House, just beside a gate lodge. Follow the drive and turn in through the first large gates on the right. The entrance to the South Wing is now straight ahead of you.

Cost and availability.
This Strathconon cottage is rented out year round from: April till October - 4pm Sunday to 10am the following Sunday; November till March 4pm Saturday to 10am the following Saturday. Short breaks are welcome.
