Fernlea Cottage is a perfect holiday retreat in the awe-inspiring region of Caithness. This converted croft has been extended to provide spacious holiday accommodation in Lybster, an old herring fishing village on the north coast of Scotland. It is an ideal haven if you want to explore the unique features of this area, as Caithness is great for those for enjoy wide open spaces and great views. Often described as the last Scottish wilderness, Caithness has silver beaches, soaring cliffs, deep caves, empty moorland and stunning scenery - a perfect setting for a holiday cottage. Lybster is a great place to stay on a self-catering holiday - a pretty seaside village with a harbour and picuturesque lighthouse.
Fernlea Cottage provides spacious three bedroom self-catering accommodation. The façade is of traditional Caithness stone and the cottage has a large enclosed garden with no close neighbours – you are guaranteed privacy! Views to the rear of the house are across open country with the sea away to the east. It is a short walk from the cottage into Lybster, a quiet fishing village with a beautiful sheltered harbour. This is a truly lovely Caithness holiday cottage from which to explore a fascinating area of Scotland. You can visit the Castle of Mey, Dunrobin castle, ancient monuments, whisky distilleries and some of the best salmon fishing rivers in Scotland.
Lybster itself has many shops and places to eat, and also Waterlines alongside the harbour which is an exhibition centre with displays about local history, fauna, flora and geology - not forgetting the herring industry which was Lybster’s lifeline. If you feel like venturing out, there is a 9-hole golf course nearby, prehistoric archaeological sites and Wick and Thurso are both within easy reach with plenty of facilities on offer. Along the coast, there are crossing points to the Orkney Islands at Gill Bay and Scrabster (car ferries) and John O’Groats for foot passengers. Dunnet Head near Thurso is the northerly point of the UK mainland and a must to visit, offering fantastic views of the northern Scottish coastline.

Accommodation:
This Caithness holiday retreat near the coast offers great accommodation on one level. The front door opens into a marble floored entrance hall with a door leading to one double bedroom to the right. To the left is the living room with open fireplace and comfortable three piece suite – perfect for cosy evenings in front of the fire. The bathroom is located in the centre of the cottage with a modern three piece sanitary unit. To the rear are the other double bedroom and one single bedroom with cot (plus a Z bed if required); and the large kitchen/dining room which is very well equipped.

By road:
Lybster is 80 miles north of Inverness, off the A99, 2 miles after the A9/A99 fork. Turn right into the main street, Fernlea Cottage is 400 yards on the right.

Availability. Property rental periods are generally a week, Saturday to Saturday. Checking in time is after 3pm and checking out time is 10am. Short breaks welcome out of season.
