Lotus Lodge Wanlockhead Dumfries and Galloway |
|
Nestled in the Lowther Hills in southern Scotland, Lotus Lodge is a large traditional holiday house which enjoys a unique position in the heart of Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland. Renowned for its spectacular scenery, Wanlockhead is the setting of ‘Hope Springs’, BBC1’s drama series, and in turn the exterior of Lotus Lodge appears as the drama’s principal location the ‘Hope Springs Hotel’.
Wanlockhead is directly on the Southern Upland Way walking trail and is ideal for hill walking, cycling and just generally relaxing and enjoying the fresh air in the quiet yet stunning surroundings. The village is home to Hidden Treasures Mining Museum where you can experience a real lead mine and pan for gold. You can also take a ride on the tourist train which runs on Britain’s highest adhesion railway between Leadhills (the neighbouring village) and Wanlockhead. The village of Leadhills also has a 9-hole golf course, if you prefer more purpose to your walking. The River Nith and The River Clyde are both close by, about 6 miles away, great for canoeing or fishing.
Lotus Lodge is also a great base for exploring southern Scotland. The surrounding area has many tourist attractions but in particular Drumlanrig Castle and Country Park is only 25 mins drive away and, with its superb children’s adventure playground, waymarked walks and excellent extensive mountain biking tracks, is well worth a visit. About 40 mins drive away is the fabulous New Lanark World Heritage Site, a restored 18th century cotton mill village next to the Falls of Clyde, which has something to appeal to everyone.
The Wanlockhead Inn, only 2 mins walk from the house, offers very good value food and drink and is very accommodating with large group bookings.
Although a remote holiday getaway, Lotus Lodge is very easily accessible being only one hour from Carlisle, Glasgow and Edinburgh and only 15 mins from the M74.
