Morton Cottage Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway |
|
Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful yet undiscovered area of Scotland - a gem not to be missed with lots to see and do without too many tourists. Morton Cottage is fortunate to have many local attractions all within a few miles including Drumlanrig Castle with beautiful gardens and a famous art collection, Ellisland Farm where Robert Burns lived in his later years and wrote some of his poems, the nearby Forest of Ae offering fantastic walks, cycle routes and picnic sites. There is the opportunity for a scenic drive to Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland or to Caelaverock Castle which was once one of Scotland's greatest forts and now a lovely nature reserve. Why not take a great day trip to visit the award-winning Mabie Fram Park to keep the whole family occupied all day or explore Threave Castle, a fascinating spot for garden enthusiasts.
The stunning Solway Coast and the beautiful Southern Upland Way is within easy reach. The cottage is near the River Nith (famous for salmon fishing) and there are many lochs nearby for catching trout and some coarse fishing is also available. This is an ideal area for cycling on the quaint country lanes and for the more energetic, some serious mountain-biking in the nearby forests (the 7-Staines). Riding stables are just round the corner and the attractive Thornhill golf course is only a few minutes drive away. You can take a leisurely walk straight from the self-catering cottage and observe the abundant wildlife (red squirrels in the adjacent wood) in this unspoilt rural area. This is an ideal honeymoon cottage to rent in Scotland too!
