4 Star self-catering holiday cottage

John Kerr Lodge
Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway

A wealth of activities are available in this lovely part of Scotland. The lodge is situated just metres from the Southern Upland Way and provides an ideal base for walking, cycling, bird watching, salmon and trout fishing on the river outside the front door, golfing on the local course or at world-famous Troon or Turnberry, to canoeing on the River Nith – some of the best white-water in Scotland – or gold panning in the scenic Mennock Valley. The Southern Uplands surrounding the lodge also boast Scotland's highest village as well as the lead museum and narrow gauge railway. Also ideal for touring the beautiful border country, there are castles nearby and historic Edinburgh is within easy reach as too is Glasgow (1.5hrs and 1hr away respectively).

Dumfriesshire is an unspoilt corner of Scotland; mountainous in the north and with fertile plains in the south and down to the coast of the Solway Firth. A break in this holiday cottage is the perfect way to get away from it all.

The imposing ruins of Caerlaverock Castle are encircled by a wide moat and surrounded by the extensive marshlands of the Caerlaverock Wetland Centre – a firm favourite with birdwatchers. Threave Castle near Castle Douglas is also well worth a visit. This massive tower is set on an island in the River Dee and you need to take a boat to get there. Built centuries later, the baroque masterpiece that is Drumlanrig Castle only 10 miles from the cottage has a fantastic collection of artworks and precious items. The extensive parkland here is very popular with cyclists.

Robert Burns spent his last years in the county town of Dumfries (there is a story that he also lived for a while in what is now Blackaddie House Hotel adjacent to the cottage) and the Robert Burns Centre here tells his story. Other towns of interest are Moffat, an attractive Victorian spa, and Langholm, birthplace of the poet Hugh McDiarmuid. And don’t miss Gretna Green, still popular with eloping couples after all these years.
