8 East Shore St Monans, Fife
|
|
The East Neuk of Fife is a beautiful part of the world with fabulous coastal and countryside scenery. The Neuk is made up of a series of fishing villages and towns built up around their harbours. St Monans is one of the smaller fishing villages in the East Neuk but still has two local grocer shops, a post office, a fabulous little gift shop, the Mayview Hotel, and the award-winning Seafood Restaurant. It also includes a café, Chinese takeaway, fish merchants selling locally caught produce and of course the well-known fish and a chip van!
First mentioned in documents dating from 1147, St Monans houses a church originally built by King David II in 1346 (costing £635.35!) and is still used for regular services today. There are a number of other local sites of historical interest in the village, such as the remnants of the 18th century Salt Pans, the Windmill, and the ruins of the 17th Century Newark Castle. There is also a small local history centre run by volunteers and a library in the village: the library has internet access. St Monans has a number of narrow alleys which are fun to explore on an evening walk.
The surrounding area provides every opportunity for recreation and leisure pursuits and St Monans is on the famous Fife Coastal Path favoured by serious and amateur walkers alike. A full range of water sports, for all ages and abilities, is on offer at Elie Watersports and at other points along the coast. There are a number of Blue Flag beaches in the area, Elie and St Andrews being 2 of them. The Isle of May has regular boat trips from Anstruther, providing a wonderful opportunity to see bird and sea life. If you are lucky the dolphins and seals might make an appearance too.
With St Andrews being the home of golf you do not have to travel far in this area before you find a golf course. The wonderful historic St Andrews itself is 14 miles away and has some of the oldest and most famous golf courses in the world. There is also a network of cycle ways and paths in Fife. St Andrews also has a swimming pool and leisure centre, a film house, a theatre and lots of shops, restaurants and pubs as well as some beautiful beaches. Leven, 7 miles away, has a swimming centre and various supermarkets and shops as expected of a small town. A number of festivals take place over the year around the East Neuk, ranging from Artists Open Day events to week long music, craft and/or art festivals with a number of local food festivals and Sea Queen events happening throughout the summer.
