East Lothian is one of the most picturesque areas of Scotland offering a magnificent coastline, beautiful sandy beaches, golf courses in abundance, museums, quaint villages, galleries and many other attractions. Garvald is a historic East Lothian village just 18 miles east of Edinburgh. It is situated in a valley with the Papana Water trickling through its southern perimeter within an attractive park.

Places to visit include Garvald’s own 12th century church, The Museum of Flight at East Fortune, Sancta Maria Abbey (a working Trappist monastery), Glenkinchie (Scotland's most southerly distillery) and the Bass Rock (originally a garrison and prison now a sanctuary for birds, most notably gannets, 150,000+ during the peak season). In-season boat trips to the Bass Rock, Isle of May and Fidra are a delight. Nearby castles include Hailes, Dirleton and Tantallon and they're all well worth a visit.

Edinburgh is quickly and easily reached by car or rail - ideal for a day trip to explore all the many attractions and sights of the capital city. John Muir’s birthplace of Dunbar is also worth a visit and the John Muir Way coastal path, which wends its way along the East Lothian coast, offers great walking.

Whether it’s a stroll, a dip or surfing East Lothian has a number of exceptional beaches within easy reach. Photographers can capture excellent views to Edinburgh and the Forth Road and Rail Bridges from Longniddry beach or the entire East Lothian coastline from the elevated position of Sancta Maria Abbey. An array of quaint shops, galleries and eateries can be found in the seaside towns of North Berwick, Gullane and Dunbar and surrounding villages. Haddington is a delightful small town, with a monthly farmers' market and lots of independent shops and great places to eat promoting local East Lothian ingredients.
