Cragside is part of the ancient mill farm of Stenmuir. 1.5 miles from the village of Hume and Hume Castle. Hume castle is open to visitors (free) and is the ancient seat of the Scottish Clan Hume/Home and in recent years has been a site of archelogical exploration. Set just 10 mins north of the attractive border town of Kelso, it allows guests the convenience of usual town amenities, whilst benefiting from being a rural and peaceful countryside get-away. Set at the foot of Hareheugh Craigs, a site of special Scientific interest, the Craigs are easily accessible on foot from Cragside where the top affords magnificent views of the surrounding border countryside, and on a good day, with binoculars, a view of the far Berwickshire coast.

The Scottish Borders is one of Scotland's best kept secrets, renowned for its turbulent history, fishing, rugby, golf, beautiful landscape and friendly people. The area is a paradise for walkers, cyclist and golfers, while in the River Tweed and its many tributaries, you'll find some of the best fishing in Scotland.

The main borders events centre, Border Union Showground, is in central Kelso. It has year round events & activites, including the annual wedding fare, monthly antiques fairs, bikers weekends and dog shows aswell as the main event in July The Border Union Agricultural Show, and the Autum Ram sales, to name but a few.

Guests will find lots to occupy their time in and around the Borders locally and further afield knowing they have somewhere peaceful and comfortable to return to at the end of the day. Whether you explore by car, on bike or on foot, you'll discover friendly towns and picturesque villages, as well as the castles, abbeys, stately homes and museums that illustrate the exciting and often bloody history of the area. To the north, within easy driving distance is the beautiful city of Edinburgh; to the south the world heritage site of Hadrian's Wall; and to the east the rugged Northumberland and East Lothian coastline.

Based near Kelso you are in the heartland of the Borders and within a short drive to the other well-known Borders towns of Jedburgh, Coldstream, Melrose and Hawick. Kelso is arguably the prettiest town in the Borders with its wonderful Flemish style cobbled streets and a large market place. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants to sample Scottish hospitality and many interesting independent shops to browse. Within a short distance of the square are Floors Castle, Kelso Race Course, Kelso golf course the Border Union showground. You'll never be lost for things to do and see in and around Kelso including the monthly farmers markets and the famous 'Common Ridings'. Held each year during the summer each of the local towns have week-long festival of events involving riding round the boundary of their area in a symbolic gesture to the Borders past.

And after a day's activities, relax & soak up the atmosphere by having an artisan coffee and take a rest on a bench in the cobbled market square and admire the giant cobble stone, created by a local artist, with the farm name engraved on it. Then take a meal at one of our amazing restaurants in town or even bring a takeaway back to the farm.

Set just 10 mins north of the attractive border town of Kelso, it allows guests the best of both worlds, while being close to all the usual amenities of a town and yet being a rural and peaceful countryside get away. Set at the foot of Hareheugh Craigs, a site of special Scientific interest, the Craigs are easily accessible on foot from Cragside, where the top affords magnificent views of the surrounding border countryside, and on a good day, with binoculars, a view of the far Berwickshire coast.

Cragside itself is a self-contained holiday let adjoining the owners property. Recently upgraded it comprises a compact 2 room suite with lounge/kitchen/dinner and ensuite bedroom with super-king or twin bed.

Guests have a dedicated parking area leading to a private courtyard with attractive planting and views onto owner's garden and pond where their tame ducks and geese have free reign around the garden. The courtyard gets the sun first thing in the morning, and is perfect for an alfresco breakfast while watching the visitors to the bird table, and enjoying the view out across the open countryside and across to the Craigs.

The courtyard leads to the kitchen/lounge/diner. Recently modernised, the kitchen comprises a fully equiped galley kitchen, with washer dryer, oven & hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee maker. There is also a housekeeping cupboard with iron, ironing board & cleaning equipment.

The dining area has a small ½ moon table overlooking the garden and bird table, and if required this can be opened up to a full circle to give more space for dining or working. There is a small bookcase containing books and reading material as well as board games and local tourist information leaflets.

The lounge area has a comfortable parker knoll sofa and flat screen TV/DVD player with wall mounted flame effect fire and chunky real wood mantle. The area is tastefully decorated in a Scottish thistle design.

The calming bedroom has either a comfortable twin or superking, with extra thick mattress topper giving a peaceful nights sleep. (Please advise your bed preference when booking). The ensuite has a modern white shower room with extra large shower. The owner chooses to donate some of her money to a 'toilet twinning' project in Africa and a certificate of the current twined loo can be seen in the ensuite for guests!

Directions:

Full directions will be given with booking confirmation. From Newcastle follow the A68 to Jedburgh and then the A698 to Kelso. From Carlisle follow the A7 to Jedburgh and then the A698 to Kelso. From the north follow the A68 south to Lauder and then the A6089 to Kelso. Hume is approximately 8 miles north of Kelso, best accessed from the A697

All bed, bathroom and kitchen linens are provided. Duvets and covers, towels and electricity are all included in the rental price.

Cost and availability:

Change over day is Friday - check out 10am, check in after 4pm usually, but if we can be flexible then we are! We welcome long weekend breaks of 3 nights from Friday and a mid-week break of 4 nights from Monday. Weekend and short breaks are available. Dogs welcome by arrangement.

Vacation in Scottish Borders

Kelso is an attractive Border town on the banks of the River Tweed - one of Scotland's most famous salmon fishing rivers. Kelso Abbey and the magnificent 12th century ruins are a popular tourist attraction. There are some superb castles and country houses in the area - Floors Castle, Abbotsford House (home of Sir Walter Scott), Mellerstain and Traquair House are some of the finest in Scotland. Kelso's Racecourse is a great day out if you like racing and the beaches of the Berwickshire and Northumberland coasts are within easy driving distance. Edinburgh is only an hour away and Hadrian's Wall is an hour and a half's drive of Kelso.
