Cottages in Argyll

cottages sleeping 1 to 4 people in Perthshire

South of Oban in Argyll lies the area of Lorn, an unspoilt land of sea and mountains, lochs and moors. Something of a backwater perhaps, rather off the main tourist trail, but easily accessible by good roads.

Fourteen miles south of Oban is the small village of Kilmelford with its church, old coaching inn and shop-cum-Post Office. A steep, narrow but well-tarmaced road leads the four miles to Lochavich, with Loch Avich itself spread before you. It's a remote but accessible glen between the sea and the vast expanse of Loch Awe, and we offer absolute peace and quiet with stunning views of mountain, moor, forest and loch. There is much to do in the immediate area, but Maolachy is also an ideal base for exploring Argyll & the Scottish Islands. Glencoe, Rannoch Moor, Fort William, Ben Nevis, the Caledonian and Crinan Canals, Kilmartin Glen, Knapdale, Gigha and Kintyre are all within easy reach.

Local shops provide the basics with supermarkets (and petrol) in Oban - 40 minutes away. Ferries go to the islands of Mull, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay and Lismore, all possible for a day's excursion.

From the cottage door you can walk or cycle for miles along forestry tracks and old drove roads, and the area is ideal for this - bicycles can safely be stored in the barns. 3 acres of woodland gardens on the cottage doorstep, with paths either side of a tumbling burn. There is good trout fishing (1 mile) and fishing for salmon, monster brown trout and pike on Loch Awe (7 miles). The famous Macrihanish golf links make a good day out with several local golf courses within 20 miles. Horse riding and watersports within 8 miles. Many of the 'Glorious Gardens of Argyll' are within 60 minutes drive. No light pollution for star watching and many castles to explore, from land and sea. A wealth of pre-history, especially Kilmartin Glen. There is excellent bird-watching, especially raptors such as golden & sea eagles and osprey. You can enjoy cruises to the islands, Loch Etive, Loch Awe and for the adventurous to the Great Corryvrechan Whirlpool. Or just relax and do nothing!

Accommodation:
Maolachy is an 18th century laird's house with its farm square - or courtyard. Garden Cottage was converted from one side of the square - part of the byre for Highland cattle - and now provides warm, comfortable accommodation for two.

There is a covered passage for coats & boots and an adjoining laundry room with automatic washing machine and tumbler drier. The cottage door opens into the kitchen/living room; the kitchen has an Everhot range cooker with hobs, two ovens & grill. Hot water is by immersion heater. There are two deep china sinks and fridge, while a pine-topped unit houses a microwave. All cutlery, china, glasses, pans & cooking equipment is provided. The sitting area has comfortable armchairs with good lighting; dining & writing tables; a coal-effect gas fire; and night store & convector heater. We have no television or mobile phone reception, but do provide a mass of books, games, jigsaws and a VHF radio/cassette/CD player. The living room door opens onto acres of garden, and the cottage has its own small lawn and south-facing terrace with benches for sitting out - the view is stunning.

Upstairs is a bedroom with coombed ceilings and double/twin beds with duvets/blankets. The Velux skylight opens east to the Wild Garden with sounds at night of the burn and owls hunting. Off the bedroom opens a snug, pine-panelled bathroom with bath, washbasin, WC and a large airing and hanging cupboard.
